Flip
flops are an excellent aid for the mental maths part of the
daily maths lesson. Easyteach have developed these bright colourful
aids to keep the children interested and motivated. The elephants
are especially designed for reception to encourage counting
to ten in ones and number bonds to 10. Teacher flip flops are
made of durable laminated card, pre-scored for easy folding.
INSTRUCTIONS
FOR USING FLIP FLOPS
Flip
Flops are laminated, scored cards that are fun to use in the
mental maths part of the daily numeracy lesson.
They are bright and colourful to help keep interest and
motivation.
The
blue elephants are designed to help Reception and Year 1 children
count to 10 and learn number bonds
to 10.
Trainers help with multiples of 2 and counting in 2’s,
Fingers help with multiples of 5 and counting in 5’s, Toes help
with multiples of 10 and counting in 10’s.
They
are pre scored to allow the teacher to fold or ‘flip’ the card
over hiding some pictures, encouraging the children to use mental
strategies and number bonds to play quick stimulating mental
maths games.
With
the elephant cards for instance, let your reception class count
the elephants with you.
When they are sure there are 10, no more or less, you
can then play a game.
Folding
the card once along any scored line, hide some elephants by
flipping them out of sight of the children.
Then
ask the children to count how many they can see now – for instance
if they can see 6 how many are hiding? Answer 4, because 6 and
4 are 10.
Every
scored line where the Flip Flop can fold shows a different number
bond to 10 eg;
1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 5 + 5 and 4 + 6
Using
this simple game the teacher can use questioning and reinforcement
to help young children learn their number bonds to 10.
